25th Year Anniversary – A Celebration of Canadian Content and Alumni Excellence
This year, in celebration of 25 years, CCPA has launched an exciting season of plays and musical theatre. In addition to several concerts and cabarets, CCPA’s 23-24 subscription season comprises five award-winning productions.
The anniversary year kicks off a little ironically with an absurd and imaginative trippy political satire of young people, forced to navigate the chaotic state of the world at one of the worst schools in history. The Weight of Ants, by David Paquet and translated by Leanne Brodie. CCPA holds the distinction of presenting the English language premier of this 2023 Governor General’s award winner for French drama in October. Lenin’s Embalmersby Vern Thiessen follows at the end of November. A gripping, hilarious, and somewhat timely play about a Russian dictator who wants to live forever. This December the Broadway hit Peter and the Starcatcher spins the tale of how young Peter becomes the legendary Pan. Brimming with orphans, pirates, and the magic of fallen stars it will set the tone for the holidays. The multiple Tony Award winning Canadian hit The Drowsy Chaperone, a hilarious musical farce blending nostalgia with a contemporary flair, will dazzle audiences with show-stopping song and dance numbers in February 2024. The highly anticipated Year-End Musical draws links to the College’s roots during co-founders’ Janis Dunning and Jacque Lemay’s time in Charlottetown, bringing the beloved East coast classic, Anne of Green Gables – The Musicalto Vancouver Island. Performed at the McPherson Playhouse in April, this marks the first time the Year-End Musical will be led entirely by Alumni. Managing Artistic Director, Caleb Marshall is proud of the talented network of Alumni, “It’s a mark of an institution’s impact when exceptional alumni can return in leadership roles as directors, choreographers, and writers.”
This special season promises classic storytelling, beloved titles, historical journeys, new work, and current issues – while celebrating theatrical magic, alumni talent, and Canadian pride.
